FAQ
What should I do if I find a tick on me or my dog?
Use fine-tipped tweezers or disposable gloves to handle the tick. If you must use your fingers, shield them with a tissue or paper towel.
Grasp the tick as close to the skin surface as possible. This reduces the possibility of the tick’s head detaching from the body upon removal.
Pull the tick straight out with a steady, even pressure. Continue applying steady pressure even if the tick does not release immediately.
After removing the tick, thoroughly disinfect the bite area and wash your hands with soap and water.
How did my dog get ticks?
Ticks wait for host animals on the tips of grasses and shrubs. When a moving animal or person brushes the plant, the tick quickly lets go of the vegetation and climbs onto the host.
This process is known as questing. Ticks can only crawl; they cannot jump or fly. Some species of ticks will crawl several feet toward a host. Some tick species can be active on winter days if the ground temperatures are above 32°F (0°C).
Do all ticks transmit Lyme disease?
No.
Lyme disease is caused by a bacterium called Borrelia burgdorferi, which is spread through the bite of infected blacklegged ticks (deer ticks). Infected blacklegged ticks need to be attached for at least 24 hours in order to transmit the bacteria that causes Lyme disease.
Deer ticks are distributed through the midwest and the eastern United States, as well as throughout Canada with the highest proportion in Ontario.
Can Lyme disease also affect people?
Yes, but people do not get it directly from dogs. They get it from being bitten by the same ticks that transmit it to dogs. Therefore, preventing exposure to ticks is important for you and your dog.
How can I prevent my dog from getting Lyme disease?
There are several products available that can kill these ticks and prevent disease transmission.
Why does my dog need a test before receiving monthly tablets?
Tablets also kill heart worm. Testing for heart worm is required before receiving the tablets, to avoid severe reactions that can mount to anaphylaxis if a dog receives tablets while they are infected with heart worm.
